Storm With Gusty Winds Knocks Out Power To Thousands In Connecticut

A strong storm system that swept through the region brought heavy rain and whipping winds with gusts topping 60 mph that left tens of thousands in Connecticut without power.

At the height of the storm, nearly 30,000 Connecticut residents were without power, according to Eversource, with more than 4,000 customers still in the dark as of 9:20 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 8.

According to Eversource, wind gusts topped 60 mph, taking down trees and damaging the company’s electric system. United Illuminating also had hundreds lose power during the peak of the storm.

“These fast-moving, severe storms left a mess. Crews are responding, making repairs and restoring power – especially in the hardest-hit communities like Brooklyn (and) Woodstock,” the company noted.

On Thursday morning, more than 100 outages were still being reported in Granby (509), Woodstock (400), Guilford (375), Thompson (350), Putnam (335), Pomfret (327), Southington (201), Mansfield (124), Somers (122), Stamford (117), Winchester (117), Killingly (110), Brooklyn (108),

“High winds pushing trees and tree limbs into the lines are responsible for the outages,” Eversource spokesman Mitch Gross said in a statement. “We have line and tree crews out there working to get these customers on as quickly and safely as possible.”
